Devin alternative for software teams: AI developers on your own machines
Devin is a hosted autonomous AI software engineer. Some teams want the same idea – give an AI a task, get a pull request back – but running on machines they control, against their real database and tests, with the coding CLI and model they choose. This page compares options for that, including mcptask runner.
What teams look for in a Devin alternative
Runs on your infrastructure
The AI developer works on a machine you control, with your project, your real database and your tests, not in a vendor's sandbox. What it can test, and where your data lives, follows from that.
Works from a task queue with priorities and dependencies
The AI takes the next task from the same queue the team uses: the most important work first, and a task that waits for another one stays out of the way until its blocker is done.
Every change is a pull request checked by tests and CI
Nothing reaches the main branch directly. Each task ends as a pull request that has passed the tests and CI, so a person reviews a change that already works.
Choice of model and coding CLI
The team picks the coding CLI and the model, and can change either later, instead of being tied to the one model a hosted service runs.

| Where it runs | Task queue | Output | Models / CLI | Source link | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| mcptask runner | On a machine you dedicate (PC or Mac) with your project cloned, your real database and tests | One queue for people and AI developers: priority, then bugs first, then oldest; blocked tasks wait | A pull request after tests and local CI | Claude Code, Codex CLI or OpenCode; Claude, GPT, Gemini, Kimi, DeepSeek, local ollama or any Anthropic-API-compatible endpoint | https://mcptask.online/runner?language=en |
| Devin | Hosted web app (app.devin.ai); Devin CLI is a local coding agent in your terminal | Tasks from the web app, Slack, Microsoft Teams or the API; Linear tickets can be assigned to Devin | Pull requests | – | https://docs.devin.aihttps://docs.devin.ai/clihttps://docs.devin.ai/integrations/linear |
| GitHub Copilot coding agent | An ephemeral environment powered by GitHub Actions, or your own infrastructure with self-hosted runners managed by Actions Runner Controller | Tasks delegated to Copilot | A draft pull request | – | https://github.blog/changelog/2025-10-28-copilot-coding-agent-now-supports-self-hosted-runners |
| Coder Agents | Entirely on self-hosted infrastructure: cloud VPCs, on-prem or air-gapped | Work delegated through a chat interface and an API | Can open pull requests | Model-agnostic: Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, AWS Bedrock and self-hosted models | https://coder.com/blog/self-hosted-ai-model-agnostic-coder-agents |

How mcptask runner works
- Runs on a machine you dedicate (PC or Mac), with your project cloned there; it works against your real database and real tests – not a cloud sandbox.
- Drives Claude Code, Codex CLI or OpenCode and is model-agnostic: Claude, GPT, Gemini, Kimi, DeepSeek, local ollama or any Anthropic-API-compatible endpoint. Triage picks the model per task.
- The loop: take a task from the queue (priority, then bugs first, then oldest) → branch → code and tests → push → pull request → local CI. In auto-squash modes it merges only after green checks; in manual modes the pull request waits for human review.
- Works on GitHub, GitLab (including self-managed) and Bitbucket Cloud.
- Task management lives at mcptask.online: MCP-native, one queue for people and AI developers, servers in an EU data centre in the Czech Republic. Your database stays with you; the code goes to the model you choose.
- Runs during the working day; a person reviews and decides about merge and release.
Pricing: Starter $19/month (min. 2 users), Professional $14 per user/month. AI developers count as users. 30 days free, no card needed. See pricing
Frequently asked questions
Is mcptask runner self-hosted?
Yes, the runner is: it runs on your own machine, a dedicated PC or Mac with your project cloned. Task management is the hosted mcptask.online app; on the Enterprise plan it runs on a dedicated server.
Which AI models can it use?
The runner drives Claude Code, Codex CLI or OpenCode and is model-agnostic: Claude, GPT, Gemini, Kimi, DeepSeek, a local model through ollama or any Anthropic-API-compatible endpoint. A triage step before each task picks the model that works on it.
Does my code leave the company?
Your database stays with you: the runner works on your machine against your real database and tests. The code is sent to the model you choose, so where it goes depends on that model – a cloud provider or a local model.
Who merges the pull request?
Every task ends as a pull request after tests and local CI. In auto-squash modes the runner merges it only after the git host's checks are green; in manual modes the pull request waits for a person to review and merge it. A person decides about release.
